LIT Music Festival 2015

Limerick Institute of Technology celebrates its Annual Music Festival 3rd, 4th & 5th March, 2015

Open to members of the public, as well as the students and staff at LIT, this three-day free event will feature a series of talks from industry experts including composers, sound artists, engineers, producers, researchers, musicologists and the founder of a successful record label.

Practical workshops using drums, compostion and audio software will be taking place, and Wednesday evening will host performances from local bands. Thursday Night  sees a very special show, Iron Mountain, following their recent album release and tour.  Student tracks and installations will be on display in the foyer of the Millennium Theatre throughout the event, supported by special broadcasting from Wired FM’s outside broadcasting unit.Music

LIVE PERFORMANCES (Thursday 5th at 6pm & Wednesday 4th at 6pm):

Iron Mountain are an instrumental post rock band from Limerick, Ireland. They are currently on tour to promote their début album UNUM. Around a core sound of Guitars, Drums, Flute and Uilleann Pipes, they have added Synths, Saxophone, Violin, Percussion and more to create a unique début album of 5 sprawling tracks. The resulting sound touches on various influences; Kraut-Rock, Folk, Metal, Psychedelia, Post Rock and more. We are delighted to have them perform at the Millennium theatre on Thursday 5th March.

TALKS (Tuesday, 3rd at 12pm):

Tom Prendergast was born in Limerick, grew up in America, and moved to Hoboken in 1982, New Jersey where he founded Bar/None Records in 1986. The label’s debut album of They Might Be Giants sold more than 100,000 copies, their follow up, Lincoln, more than doubled that. Following these successes Tom went on to work with Edwyn Collins, Luka Bloom, Yo La Tengo, Freedy Johnston, Tindersticks, DJ Spooky, among nany, many others.

The Pigtown Fling -Panel Discussion

A panel discussion encompassing the creation, from concept to final production, of the hugely successful Pigtown Fling, hosted in Limerick City in 2014. Four key speakers involved in this process will give an insight into the journey they undertook from first conceiving the idea:

  • Noel Hogan – The Cranberries/Monoband
  • Eoin Devereux – Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Limerick
  • John Samuel Greenwood – Artist Raw Nerve Noise

Kerry Hagan is a Lecturer at the UL in the Digital Media and Arts Research Centre (DMARC) and president of the Irish Sound, Science and Technology Association (ISSTA).

She is a composer and researcher working in both acoustic and computer media; developing real-time methods for spatialization and stochastic algorithms for musical practice. Her work endeavours to achieve aesthetic and philosophical aims while taking inspiration from mathematical and natural processes. In this way, each work combines art with science and technology from various domains.

WORKSHOPS (Wednesday, 4th at 2pm):

John Bowker is a professional ethnomusicologist and hand drum expert. He has been teaching and researching the hand drum for over 30 years. To his workshops he brings a deep understanding, a vast knowledge from drum culture across the globe, and an ability to facilitate large groups in exploring these rhythms together with a great sense of humour.

Karen Power is an Irish composer, educator, improviser and academic who writes primarily for acoustic and electro acoustic forces.

In 2009 she completed a PhD in acoustic and electroacoustic composition at SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre), Belfast, with Prof. Michael Alcorn. Karen is an active improviser, who specializes in using environmental and everyday sounds as catalysts for constructing new soundworlds, which also feeds in to her educational work with children and adults. Karen’s first CD release, “Is It Raining While You Listen” (Farpoint Recordings), features compositions & field-recording based work alongside short notes by Mary Nunan, Chris Watson and David Toop.
